Context
The Intercultural Youth Services Corps (IYSCorps) program provided a valuable opportunity for youths to gain skills suitable for their needs by creating self-led projects with a $1,000 grant in funding. I lead a team of 4 to create a 16-page non-profit magazine to increase awareness about the impact of climate change on natural disasters.
Process
01 Planning
My initial idea was to focus on the environmental impact of climate change. Through brainstorming with my team, we established a purpose for our content, which narrowed down our target audience so we had a clear idea about what topics we would cover.
I planned to cover 4 topics related to natural disasters caused by climate change and assigned each member to research and write for their own sections.
02 Articles
I was in charge of writing the landslides section and helped my team with their sections, including proofreading and the different sections to write for. As the project leader, I set tasks and deadlines for each member and prepared notes after each meeting so members who couldn’t make it were not left out.
03 Graphics
I decided to mix the style of realistic photos with flat graphics to create a balance of fun and learning for the younger audience. I want to encourage curiosity and interest in these topics through attractive visuals as well as maintaining consistency through the different styles of each section.
04 Successes + Insights
The Climate Compass was successfully published and we distributed 144 copies in the Metro Vancouver area in British Columbia in libraries, schools, and non-profit organizations. Our magazine received a lot of positive feedback for its quality and graphics.
I learned a lot about project management during this project. My skills in vector graphics improved and I gained more experience communicating between team members with different communication styles and schedules.
