Context

The ENS is a Web3 company that creates usernames for people on the blockchain. I was selected to test their brand guideline for their yearly conference – frENSday. By creating a group of “frens” for the conference branding, each year a different designer will use the brand guideline to design the character in their unique styles. My task is to follow the instructions in the guidelines to create the characters in my style and provide feedback about the user experience.

Process

01 Style

The brand guidelines established the character attributes of each character, their shapes and colors, and the location of their eyes and feet. I appreciated the different examples it provided to show the widely different types of styles possible for each character.

02 Characters

I designed the characters according to their personal color palettes and shapes and added my touch to their features and accessories. I wanted to provide a feeling of warmth, so I used gradient hues and comfortable clothing with roundness to their edges.

To suit the hand-drawn style, I created the typeface for ‘frENS’ in a similar style, with its colors corresponding to each character.

04 Feedback

I received very positive feedback from the design team. They loved how playful the characters were and how well their personalities and color identities were expressed. Among the user testing results, my designs were one of their favorites.

I appreciated the feedback and with some more refinement, I can improve the designs and style in my personal brand. I enjoyed creating the characters and this project developed my skills in character design and following brand guidelines.
